September 2010 Patch Tuesday – Nine Bulletins

Today was patch Tuesday and this month Microsoft put out nine bulletins addressing 13 vulnerabilities, reported by Ars Technica. Four vulnerabilities are marked Critical, the other 5 are Important, and four of the nine patches will require a restart.

“Here You Have” Email Worm Spreads Quickly

A mass-mailing worm of the type not seen since around 2002 has emerged and is spreading rapidly. PC World reports that while the worm is tenacious, it is not particularly harmful; it spreads via email attachment as well as network shares.

The worm appears in e-mail messages with the subject “Here you have,” and contains what seems to be a link to an Adobe PDF file. In fact the link takes the victim to a Web page hosted on the members.multimania.co.uk domain that then tries to download a screensaver (.scr) file. If the user agrees to installing that file, he is then infected by the worm, which mails itself to his e-mail contacts.

The worm has been moving a great deal through corporate environments, it affects users of Outlook but it is unclear if it affects other email clients. It has been bogging down email servers as it mails itself to the whole address book. It is also copying itself to local hard drives and network share drives. Major companies like Disney, Proctor and Gamble, Comcast, and even NASA are currently grappling with the worm.

As of Thursday afternoon the worm was mostly undetected by anti-virus programs but they are starting to add it to their definitions. It appears that the malicious screensaver has been taken down from members.multimania.co.uk so the infections should start to abate. The lesson learned from this is that even such basic techniques as a little social engineering and an attack technique from 8 years ago will still yield impressive results and it is always important to be mindful of security while on the computer.

Enable Remote Play on PSP for Dumped or Ripped PS3 Games

Sony PS3 (PlayStation 3) and PSP (PlayStation Portable) has a Remote Play feature which allows a PlayStation Portable user to interact with PlayStation 3′s Xross Media Bar. Remote Play delivers live video stream of PS3 output image to PSP, enabling users to access music, videos, photos, PlayStation games, The PlayStation Store and various applications stored on the PlayStation 3′s HDD, or external flash drives and optical media attached to the PlayStation 3.

Essentially, Remote Play is almost similar to Remote Desktop, except that instead of PC-to-PC, it’s a PS3-to-PSP connection that transmit audio and video for remote playing of video games.

After the PS3 been hacked and jailbroken, it appears that PS3 games that currently do not support Remote Play can be made into supporting Remote Play, simply by editing the SFO file of the games that have been backup (i.e. dump or rip) to the PS3′s hard disk.

Developers can now complete their applications and games for the Windows Phone 7 platform. The release is available for download over the web. Currently the release is only in English Language. The other languages will soon be available in upcoming weeks which includes French, German, Spanish and Italian.

iPhone + Netflix = Awesome

How practical is streaming Netflix movies and TV shows to your iPhone?  Who cares.  I just downloaded the Netflix app on my iPhone 4, and Arrested Development is playing on 3G pretty well.  On Wi-Fi I had no issues.  On 3G, it only stopped to buffer a few times during the show, which is pretty good.  It’s very usable in 3G which makes the app worth it.

I used to be a Blockbuster guy until I switched to Netflix a few months ago.  Before Blockbuster shutdown a ridiculous amount of stores, I was having the time of my life.  I could rent 2 movies from Blockbuster online, they’d get to me in a few days, I’d watch them, return them to a local Blockbuster, they would ship them back and let me rent 2 free movies in the store for free while I was waiting for the next movies in queue to be delivered.  I’ll be honest, sometimes I’d get lazy and not send back movies for a few months (and my credit card would get dinged $14.95 each month), but in my prime I could get 2-4 movies per week, which was a good deal.  The 2 free in-store rentals is what kept me a Blockbuster fan.  Now I don’t even know where a Blockbuster is so…

I finally came around to Netflix because I wanted to stream movies through my Xbox 360.  I rarely rent online movies.  Again, I think I’ve had The Blind Side on Blu-ray for over a month, but I stream movies and TV shows a few times a week, which makes the $9/mo subscription worth it.

The best part is that the Netflix iPhone app is free, and they easily could have charged at least a few bucks for it.  Giving away this “added value” was smart on their part.

Apple Re-invents iPods

Apple went with a completely different look with the iPod Nano which boasts beautiful touch screen, but gave up the ability to play videos, and the Shuffle has gone back to a more classic design with buttons to more easily control the songs you want to play.  But probably the coolest feature of the new line of the iPods is on the new iPod Touch which is now thinner than ever and has a webcam identical to that of the iPhone 4 and allows users to Video Chat using FaceTime.  The only requirement to use FaceTime is that you must be connected to a WiFi network.  I currently have the iPhone 4 and have used FaceTime only a couple times due to the fact that not many of my friends have the iPhone 4 yet.  Hopefully with this new feature, FaceTime will become more of a relevant application and will be used much more often.

But not only did Apple release a new line of iPods, they also introduced iTunes 10 with Ping, a social music service that lets you see what your friends are listening to and you can make recommendations and comment on the music.  In its early stages, it seems as though Apple has some bugs to work out before Ping will really catch on.

Defragmenting=Very Important

To keep your computer running as fast as possible, it is important to perform certain maintenance tasks on it. One these tasks are called defragmenting your hard drive(s) or defrag for short.

What is defragmentation?

Let’s say you have saved a bunch of files to a brand new hard drive (HD) and then over time you remove half of them. Those spaces or blocks you removed the files from are empty but scattered throughout the HD. Now let’s say you save a much larger file to the HD. The system will use the smaller blocks first thus breaking the file into pieces. When you go to open that file, the system needs to reassemble the file and depending on how many blocks the file resides in will depend on how long it will take to open. Defragging your HD will put those pieces in order allowing the system to find them faster and open quicker. Running periodic defrags will keep your system running as fast as possible and although Windows comes with its own utilities including one for defragging, I use a software called Defraggler.

10 Reasons Why Computer Crash

Often if a device has a problem a yellow ‘!’ appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as ‘IRQ holder for PCI steering’. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly.If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer’s display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to ‘yes’ to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

Speeding Up Internet Explorer 8

The problem, in most cases, is the presence of IE restricted sites and enhanced security configuration zones, which are generally created automatically by spyware removal software, such as Spybot and IESpyAd. Traditionally, the presence of these entries has been hugely beneficial, offering protection against malicious software. However, Internet Explorer 8 includes new security measures that may obviate the need for these entries, and the browser can suffer a tremendous speed hit in their presence.

The fastest and easiest way to remove these entries and dramatically increase Internet Explorer 8’s speed is to use the DelDomains package. Right click on this link and save the file to your desktop. Next, right-click on the downloaded file (DelDomains.inf) and select “Install.” The package will remove all Internet Explorer restricted sites, enhanced security configuration zones and trusted sites.

Alternatively, or in addition to the above fix, you can try registering actxprxy.dll, a process that has improved Internet Explorer 8’s performance for a handful of users.

Click the Start button then search for “CMD.” Right-click cmd.exe and select “Run as Administrator,” then type regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and press return. Quit then re-launch Internet Explorer 8 and check for improved performance.

Adobe Reader Suffers From Yet Another Exploit

Last week saw the addition of another chapter to the never-ending malware saga that is Adobe Reader. A clever exploit for a vulnerability was uncovered by researcher Mila Parkour and Reader as well as Acrobat currently remain unpatched. PC World reports that the expoit uses rigged PDF files that include code to exploit the zero-day flaw.

It has been called impressive and clever because it first gets around 2 Microsoft-created protections,

The sophisticated exploit bypasses two important defenses that Microsoft erected to protect Windows, ASLR (address space layout randomization) and DEP (date execution prevention), researchers have confirmed.

Second, the attack also boasts a valid digital signature by Vantage Credit Union. Verisign has revoked the signature to prevent further usage but the malware that’s already out there will still be carrying what looks like a valid signature. The attacks have been targeted to specific corporations and individuals but now that the word is out the hackers will probably expand its target range.

Adobe has not offered any word on how to avoid the attacks or when they will have a patch ready. They did warn users on Tuesday about the malware. To get infected the bad PDF needs to be viewed so it does require some interaction and disabling JavaScript will block the attack.

This is the latest attack to use digital signatures to fool defense systems, it bears a resemblance to the Stuxnet worm which was a problem for some companies over the summer. It wouldn’t be surprising if in the future more malware uses these sophisticated techniques with digital signatures since they have been effective.

Facebook Warns of Clickjacking Scam

New Facebook scam could be costing victims $5 a week reports PCWorld, spread by the “Share” feature. The malware is similar to a worm that plagued Facebook in May with a rigged “Like” button that would run a script when it was clicked. What happens is that a Facebook user sees an interesting link and upon clicking it they see a page claiming to need human verification through a 3-step process. On the second step they are asked to click a “Next” button where the scam really starts; as it turns out it isn’t a real “Next” button,

the “Next” button doesn’t actually have any functionality and is just a dummy. But hidden underneath the “Next” button is a functional “Share” button. So while it looks like you are just clicking on “Next” to get to the final step, what you are actually doing is posting that page to your profile wall using the Share function.

Its noted that users running Firefox with the No Script add-on will see it blocking the scam script. After the content is shared on their page by clicking the “Next” button, the user is prompted in the third step to fill out a survey for the scammers. The survey gathers personal information including a cell phone number, then adds “The Awesome Test” along with an extra $5/week to the victim’s cell phone bill without them knowing unless they read the fine print.

Facebook’s response to the scam is to remove all fan pages relating to it. For people that may have been affected, first they should make sure any links posted to their wall have been removed and manually remove any stray ones. Second, if they filled out the survey they should contact their cell phone company to check for extra charges.

MessenPass – Recover Lost Instant Messenger Passwords

Did your client forget their Instant Messenger password? Messenpass is a portable, freeware application designed to show the passwords of a variety of instant messengers. Supported programs include:

Messenpass applies to the current user logged in on the computer and it only works if one of the above programs was set to remember passwords. It can’t be used to grab passwords of other users. If it fails to detect any installed IM program they can be manually added with the ‘Select Folder’ option from the File menu. In the main page of Messenpass any passwords can be selected and copied to the clipboard in a tab-delimited format.

Messenpass also has command line options which are shown in a table on the web page.

Note: some antivirus programs have a false alert that shows Messenpass as being infected with a Trojan.

40 Windows Apps Contain Critical Bug

Last week it was announced that 40 different Windows apps contain a bug that could be used to hijack PCs and infect them with malware. Computerworld reports that security researcher HD Moore, chief security officer at Rapid7 and creator of the open-source Metasploit penetration-testing toolkit, has been the one blowing the horn on these vulnerabilities. It was first found about four months ago when Apple patched it in the Windows version of iTunes. The same bug remains in more than three dozen different apps, according to Moore, who wouldn’t reveal the specifics of which programs are affected.

Each program will have to be patched separately by their respective application developers. Moore found the bug when he was researching the Windows shortcut bug that was recently patched on August 2. He says about the vulnerability,

Turning Website Visitors Into Clients

It seems that it is essential to have a website for your Computer Repair business is in this day and age. Luckily for us, setting up a website is easier than ever thanks to many pre-existing packages like Wordpress or Joomla. Even without these pre-existing packages, basic web design skills are taught in many computer related courses now days there a huge amount of people know how to get a basic webpage online.

Getting targeted traffic is also much easier thanks to services like Google Adwords. The problem is that creating a website is one thing, creating a website that converts is something else. For most sites a “conversion” would be a making a sale but in our case, a conversion would be a phone call or a booking made through the website.

The reason why many sites dont convert is because they dont answer the questions the visitor wants to know straight away. There has been many studies that say that you have about 7 seconds to get a users attention before they leave the website.

So what are these questions? The questions you need to answer very quickly are:

What is this site about? – Imagine you are searching for something on Google and you arrive at a website. Do you take the time to read the 400 word block of text on their front page? or do you scan quickly and trying to figure out whether this site is relevant to what you are searching for? Unless you have a lot of time to read large blocks of text, you would scan the information instead of reading it. You need to answer the question about what your site is about very quickly, ideally a sentence somewhere near the top of the site.

What type of work do you do? – OK, so I now know you do computer repair, but will you be able to fix my problem? A very short list of the type of work you do is a good idea. I recommend that you don’t get too technical with your list since many people dont know what they need. For example, instead of writing that you setup exchange servers, it might be better to say that you setup “Business Email”.

For example, lets say you have a Real Estate business contact you. All they know is that they need their guys to be able to receive emails to their Blackberrys in the field and also synchronize their calendars and contacts.

They dont know a setup like this is would need an Exchange server, all they need to know is that they need a business level email setup. Its up to you to listen to their needs and determine that an Exchange server would be best for them.
You need to reflect this in your marketing if you wish to cater to this type of client. Of course, if you are an Exchange expert and help troubleshoot business that already have an Exchange setup, then it would be worth mentioning since they already know what they need fixed is called an Exchange Server.

Where are you located? – I now know that you are a Computer Technician and you are able to fix my problem, but I need someone to come onsite which means you will need to be local. Where you are located and what areas do you service? Many Computer Technician websites will put this critical information on another page but you cant always expect the user to visit any of the other pages. You need to answer these questions in a way that they can pick up while only scanning.

How much will it cost? – An obvious extension on the other questions. Some users will be shopping solely on price so again, you need to answer this questions quickly before they leave the website.

How can I get in contact with you? – Great! You sound like a good match. Im just going to pick up the phone and… umm.. wheres your number? Oh, its on this contact page.
I personally believe that the phone number should always be on the front page and if they want any additional contact information like Fax or postal address, then they can find that on the contact page. Take a look at the flyer from your local Pizza place. A Pizza shop is another business that relies on getting phonecalls to make money. It is almost guaranteed that their phone number is on the front page of the flyer, even if the flyer has multiple pages.

This is the difference between someone who has just has a site verses someone who has a site that turns into phone calls. Steve Cherubino from the Podnutz podcast already knows all of this and has specifically created a product catering to computer technicians with his Tech Site Builder. This allows technicians to skip all the time and experimentation trying to make a site that converts – and just buy a template that does.

One last issue worth mentioning in regards to converting is the quality of traffic you are bringing to your site. There are various forms of advertising you can do both online and offline, but one of the best ways to get instant targeted traffic to your website is Google Adwords. Basically, you choose the keywords you want your website to come up under when someone searches for a certain term and your ad will be on that page. You bid how much you pay for that keyword and that will determine the position of your ad on the screen. If you want the top ad position then you need to pay more than the other advertisers.

Unless your business serves all states in your country, then you will want to target keywords like “computer repair dallas” rather than just “computer repair”. All the big franchises bid against each other for “computer repair” to get the the better ad locations which raises the price of that keyword significantly. This is fine for the big boys which large budgets that serve every state, but for someone who works only within their state this is a bad way to go.

You can pay for the term “computer repair”, but the ad may show up for someone who is a significant distance from you which means that they will visit the site, but since you are nowhere near them it wont convert. To make matters worse, you still have to pay for their visit! So choose keywords very specific to what you do in the location that you do it in since they are cheaper and will convert better.

Security company PandaLabs, the research section of Panda Security, claims that 1 in 4 worms spread through USB flash drives and other portable storage devices as reported by Computerworld. That includes cell phones, music players, and cameras; anything with internal storage or memory cards that can be connected to the computer.

These devices make a good vector of infection because malware can easily copy itself to the device; while in the device the worm hides so the owner of the device never knows it’s there. Once plugged into a computer USB devices often auto-run and malware can transfer over nearly invisibly, infecting the computer.

While a quarter of all 2010’s worms rely on USB devices to spread to other PCs, a recent Panda survey of more than 10,000 small- and medium-sized firms found that 27% of those victimized by a malware infection in the last year reported that the attack had originated with infected USB hardware, primarily flash drives.

The nasty Stuxnet worm that plagued industrial companies earlier this summer by exploiting the now-patched shortcut bug stemmed from a USB flash drive harboring malware. It targeted software that managed large-scale industrial control systems. Stuxnet loaded itself onto a PC whenever users viewed the contents of the drive with Windows Explorer or a similar program. Another famous worm that used the USB vector to spread is the Conflicker worm of two years ago.

Controlling and preventing attacks off USB devices is difficult because it would involve having to control everything plugged into the computer. Even the US military is having these sort of problems as seen in the recent news about a 2008 infection that compromised a sensitive military command network.

Earlier this week, U.S Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn revealed that the U.S. Central Command’s (CENTCOM) network was compromised after an infected USB drive was plugged into one of the network’s PCs. CENTCOM is the military’s joint regional command responsible for the Middle East, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

The best measures to take to secure PCs is to control auto-run and virus-scan USB devices, especially after they have been on an outside network. By default Windows doesn’t auto-run on its own and asks the user what to do. After Conflicker, Microsoft updated Windows to fix a bug that prevented users from disabling auto-run. Windows 7 inherently performs auto-run a bit differently to prevent these sort of attacks. In addition, Panda is offering a free tool that completely disables auto-run called Panda USB Vaccine.
