Make CD/DVD as the first boot device
When you put Windows 7 DVD for an installation, you need to ensure that the first boot device is set as CD/DVD drive in BIOS. Boot sequence needs to be altered in order to do a fresh installation from Windows 7 DVD so that the CD boots before the hard disk does. BIOS set-up can be entered by pressing ‘Del’ or ‘F2′ key at the start up.
Installing on a different hard disk
If you already have two hard disks on the same computer, then you can format the other partition and then install the Windows 7 from the DVD, if Windows XP is installed on one hard disk. You can start installation from the CD at the startup and when Windows installation asks for a partition, you need to select the drive onto which Windows 7 needs to be installed and installation will be completed. After the restart, you will get the prompt which OS needs to be selected.
Creating a new partition
When you are installing the Windows 7 onto the same hard disk in which Windows XP is installed, then you need to create a new partition to do an upgrade installation of Windows 7. If there are multiple partitions on the same computer, you can select that drive. Windows 7 provides you the option to create multiple partitions and if you have difficulty in creating a partition, you can try using third party software such as Partition Manager to create a new partition prior to installing Windows 7. Once the drive is partitioned and ready to be installed, you can proceed with the Windows 7 installation.
